Collection InstructionsPatient Preparation:
It is preferable for the patient to be off medications for three days prior to collection. However, common antihypertensives (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, alpha and beta blockers) cause minimal or no interference. Patient should avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco (including use of nicotine patch), bananas, citrus fruits and strenuous exercise prior to collection
For unpreserved collections:
For the duration of collection patient must keep specimen in refrigerated condition. Specimen should be transported to the lab within 6-8 hours in cool (refrigerated) condition for processing.
Handling InstructionsAliquot 10 mL of well mixed 24-hour urine specimen and ship frozen. Record 24-hour urine volume and patient's age on test request form and on urine container
Measure 24-hour urine and Acidify urine to pH International handling:
Use 25 mL 6N HCl to adjust 24-hour urine pH to < or =3
Mix well and aliquot 10mL for testing, freeze for transport.
