HLA-B27 antigen is present in 8% of Caucasians, 1-3% of
Asians and 3% of African Americans. In patients with ankylosing spondylitis, HLA-B27 is found in 89%, 85% and 58% of Caucasians, Asians and African Americans, respectively
HLA-B27 is found in 80% of Caucasians with Reiter's disease and 25% of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients

Flow cytometric evaluation of HLA-B27 is a screening tool and should be verified with a second method (microcytotoxicity or molecular method) to confirm positive or equivocal results
